California-minimalism

The owners wanted to upgrade their home in aesthetics and square footage. Their primary goal was to make the kitchen and living area larger and to grow the primary suite. We designed an addition that does just that while maintaining the home's general layout. The house will remain a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, but the additional 440 SF will transform the home into a more functional, open-concept design.

The kitchen and living space expanded towards the street and into the side yard, allowing the entry to be more pronounced with a welcoming porch. The addition also created an interior foyer with storage and a connection to the garage, which the home previously lacked. The interior kitchen and living room layout was completely re-envisioned into an open concept with a large kitchen island, ample room for a dining table, and a generous living room area. The owners wanted the design to embrace the beautiful San Diego weather with indoor-outdoor living, so the new design includes two large sliders and windows that open to the exterior.

On the back of the house, we expanded the primary bedroom, which allowed for a walk-in closet and a larger bathroom. A large glass sliding door in the primary suite enables the owners to enjoy the indoor-outdoor connection in their bedroom. The owners value minimalism, so the existing scale of the house was maintained, including the current roof line and windows. A new coat of white paint on the stucco walls will brighten the exterior, and the light-colored wood on the front will add a soft, minimalistic accent to the home.
